Delivering a Seamless EV Charging App Experience

One of our largest clients, operating a vast network of EV charging stations across Europe, envisioned a mobile app that would give drivers complete control and visibility over their charging journey from locating a charger to managing real-time charging sessions, to reviewing past usage and billing history. But for this experience to be truly seamless, intuitive, and fast, the mobile app needed more than just a user interface. It needed a powerful backend platform that could deliver accurate data in real time, orchestrate complex interactions between multiple systems, and scale effortlessly as demand grew.

That’s exactly what we built.

The Vision

From the beginning, the goal was clear: develop a mobile-first platform that empowers EV drivers with everything they need at their fingertips. Whether searching for the nearest available charger, starting a charging session, or reviewing previous activity, users should be able to complete each action within seconds, securely and without confusion.

Behind this simple experience, however, lies a complex network of systems: third-party charging platforms, customer and vehicle data sources, real-time charger status feeds, billing engines, and authorization layers. Our mission was to unify all of this through a single backend solution—abstracting the complexity, enforcing business logic, and delivering clean, usable responses to the app.

What We Built

At the core of the mobile experience is the backend platform we developed a modern, event-driven architecture that enables real-time, contextual charging functionality. This system is the invisible engine that powers the EV driver’s entire digital journey.

1. Live Charging Control

Drivers can start, stop, and monitor their charging sessions directly through the app. Our backend ensures that each command reaches the charger in real time, and that the app always reflects the current status of the session—remaining time, energy delivered, cost, and more.

To make this work reliably, we built in smart decision-making logic. For example, if a charger is temporarily unresponsive or in use by another driver, the system detects and reports it before allowing a session to begin—avoiding confusion and wasted time.

2. Charger Availability & Navigation

One of the most critical parts of the app is the map where drivers can see all available charging sites around them. But not every charger is relevant to every user. Some chargers are public, others are restricted to workplace access or internal fleets. Some are in maintenance mode or already in use.

Our platform filters all of this in real time, based on the driver’s profile and permissions. When a user opens the map, they only see the sites that are truly available to them. If they zoom in, the platform returns individual charging stations. When they zoom out, nearby stations are grouped into dynamic clusters that respond to zoom level and location.

3. Search & Discovery

We enabled powerful, flexible search logic so users can find charging sites by name, address, charger ID, or even partial matches. The system accounts for typos, different formats, and ambiguous input offering relevant results quickly.

This functionality supports a wide range of use cases: fleet managers searching for their workplace chargers, travelers looking for a station in a new city, or private drivers planning a weekend trip.

4. Charging History & Billing Transparency

After a charging session ends, the driver can access full details: time, duration, cost, and energy delivered. The platform aggregates this information from multiple sources and presents it in a unified format ready for personal tracking or reimbursement.

For users with multiple vehicles or roles (e.g., fleet managers), the system allows switching between different views to analyze usage per car or per account.

5. Customer Onboarding Flows

We support the complete registration journey from creating Contacts and Accounts to setting up Driver Contracts and issuing Charge Keys. This ensures every new driver is onboarded with accurate data, appropriate access rights, and a frictionless experience from day one.

6. Promotions, Coupons, and Campaigns

Our system enables dynamic support for discounts, promotional codes, and campaign logic. Whether it’s welcoming first-time users with special offers, providing time-based or location-specific discounts, or launching targeted promotions, the platform guarantees that the right incentives reach the right users at exactly the right time.

7. Real-Time Charging Notifications

To keep users informed and engaged throughout their charging journey, we deliver session notifications in real time. From the moment charging begins to the final kilowatt delivered, drivers receive timely and reliable updates, enhancing both transparency and trust.

Real-time sync with third-party platforms to get the latest charger and session data
Graceful handling of network issues, data delays, and fallback scenarios
