Autocharge: Enabling Effortless Charging Experience

As electric mobility grows, convenience and automation are essential for user satisfaction. Autocharge provides an intuitive experience by allowing drivers to plug in and start charging without physical cards or mobile applications. Our team manages the integration layer connecting vehicle systems and backend services to ensure reliable communication while improving operational efficiency. This case study explores the technical implementation and benefits of Autocharge for the charging industry.

Background and Motivation

The idea to implement Autocharge enrollment sessions originated from the needs of one of our largest clients, who sought a seamless and secure way to onboard vehicles for automatic charging at their network of charging stations. Their challenge was to create a frictionless experience where drivers could simply plug in their vehicle and have charging start automatically without manual payments or interruptions.

What is Autocharge?

Defining the Plug & Charge Experience

Autocharge is an authorization mechanism that allows an electric vehicle to initiate a charging session automatically simply by plugging into a compatible charging station. The core principle is the automatic identification of the vehicle, eliminating the need for any manual interaction from the driver beyond connecting the charging cable.

For the EV driver, the Autocharge experience is characterized by its unparalleled simplicity:

Arrival and Connection: The driver pulls up to an Autocharge-enabled station and connects their EV.

Instantaneous Authorization: The charging station identifies the unique vehicle ID and communicates with the backend system for authorization.

Immediate Charging: Upon successful authorization, the charging session begins without any further input.

Invisible Payment: The billing process is handled entirely in the background, linked to the driver’s pre-registered account or contract with their chosen e-Mobility Service Provider (EMP).

Hassle-Free Departure: The driver is free to leave the vehicle to charge, confident that the process is secure and automatic.

While the user experience is designed to be invisible, Autocharge relies on robust technical underpinnings, primarily leveraging the widely adopted Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP).

Our Role

The Integration Layer

Our integration layer serves as the orchestrator between multiple systems involved in the Autocharge workflow. We ensure:

  • Synchronization between customer identity and vehicle data.
  • Real-time handling of events from external systems such as Charger Station Management System and authorization platforms.
  • Enforcement of business logic and status validation throughout the onboarding journey.
  • Robust error handling to ensure fallback scenarios are covered and clearly communicated to users.

How Autocharge Enrollment Works

1. Enrollment Initiation

A critical operational challenge is linking a new vehicle’s ID to an existing user account for the first time. The OCPP protocol itself does not have a dedicated command for this account linking and that is why we developed a custom onboarding process. that begins with the user selecting a site and a connector from the mobile application. Our system then initiates an onboarding session for the selected vehicle and charger.

This session acts as a temporary context holder for all actions and validations that follow. It ensures only one active onboarding process exists per user and helps track the enrollment lifecycle.

A key operational consideration in Autocharge deployment is the initial linking of a new vehicle’s identifier to an existing user account. Our proprietary enrollment workflow commences with the user’s explicit selection of a charging location and a specific CCS connector within the mobile application. This action triggers the initiation of a dedicated enrollment session, associating the specified vehicle with the chosen charging infrastructure.

This session acts as a temporary context holder for all actions and validations that follow. It ensures only one active onboarding process exists per user and helps track the enrollment lifecycle.

2. Connector Interaction & Event Listening

Upon the driver’s physical connection of the CCS connector, a secure vehicle-to-charger communication handshake is established. This interaction generates a CHARGING_AUTHORIZATION event from the CSMS, which systematically transmits the vehicle’s unique Vehicle Identifier (VID). Leveraging our robust internal event listener architecture, this event is subsequently consumed and precisely correlated with the active enrollment session.

At this point, multiple validations are performed:

  • Verification of VID validity.
  • Assessment for pre-existing association of the VID with another vehicle account.
  • Confirmation against a defined VID blacklist.

Our system rigorously enforces data integrity throughout this stage, dynamically updating enrollment statuses or terminating the process if any anomalies or non-compliance are identified.

3. Blacklist Enforcement

As a security and quality measure, our system seamlessly integrates with a dedicated vehicle identifier blacklist service. This blacklist prevents specific VIDs, either known to be fraudulent or those associated with historical issues, from participating in the Autocharge ecosystem.

Any attempt to enroll a blacklisted VID results in immediate process termination, with clear and concise notification provided to the user. This robust, preventative mechanism thwarts unauthorized access and usage from the initial stages of enrollment, mitigating potential risks.

4. Vehicle Verification

Subsequent to the successful reception and validation of the VID, the system awaits user confirmation through the mobile app that the vehicle is properly connected. Upon confirmation, our integration logic triggers the creation of a virtual RFID card in the CRM system, associating it with the vehicle and enabling Autocharge process moving forward.

Intelligent Session Management

To ensure a smooth and reliable onboarding experience, we manage each Autocharge enrollment through a smart session system. This system meticulously tracks the entire enrollment lifecycle, from the user’s initial commitment to the successful activation of the vehicle for Autocharge functionality.

We continuously monitor the session in real time, guiding the process step by step from detecting the vehicle, verifying the connection, to confirming activation. Should any deviation from the expected workflow occur, such as no vehicle being detected or multiple vehicles connecting at once, the system safely ends the session and informs the user, allowing them to try again without confusion.

This intelligent handling ensures the process remains seamless for users, while maintaining the reliability and integrity of the overall charging experience

Outcome

Autocharge is more than just a convenience feature; it is a strategic enabler for the widespread adoption and successful operation of electric vehicle charging networks. By prioritizing the user experience and significantly reducing transactional friction, Autocharge enhances customer satisfaction, drives higher utilization of charging infrastructure, and provides a clear competitive advantage
